Areas of Responsibility:
The Library Media Specialist provides assistance in all areas of library services. The Library Media Specialist performs instructional assistance and clerical tasks related to the purchasing, processing, organizing and dissemination of library resources. By working closely with the Principal, staff and students, it is the responsibility of the Library Media Specialist to create a user friendly, functional, full-service library. The Library Media Specialist works under the supervision of the building administrator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assists students in the effective use of the library-media center, including assistance with the operation and application of technology and related software housed in or accessed through the library.
- Assists individual students in the research process, helping students understand their research task, locating resources, using the resources and synthesizing the information.
- Promotes reading by knowing recommended literature and promoting the library collection.
- Assists with implementation of reading motivation activities and programs.
- Assists the teaching staff in the selection of resources and services consistent with instructional programs. Uses review and awards to assist in selecting quality materials.
- Assists in maintaining an inviting atmosphere in the library media facility, creating displays that reflect student learning, interests and curricular topics.
- Attends meetings, work sessions and in-service opportunities as required by the district.
- May supervise students in the media center during recess, lunch periods, and before and after school, following district and school policies and guidelines for maintaining appropriate student behavior, as scheduling allows for breaks and lunch.
- Manages the circulation and retrieval of materials and equipment, the care and storage of materials, the accounting and record keeping systems for collection inventory.
- Provides monthly and yearly circulation statistics and year-end inventory reports.
- Prepares orders for services, equipment and acquisitions and checks orders for completeness and accuracy.
- Maintains records for equipment, service and acquisitions.
- Processes books following standard procedures.
- Keeps records on the use of library materials and maintains the media center computerized system for cataloging and circulation of materials.
- Fulfills other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee works with groups of students and on a one-to-one basis. Students include those who may be physically and mentally handicapped, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and culturally different. Supervision and instructional responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 45 consecutive minutes and to sit for prolonged periods. Significant physical abilities include reaching, handling, fingering, talking, hearing conversations and near visual acuity/visual accommodation. The employee must be able to lift or maneuver up to 40 pounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma and more than two years of advanced education or experience in the specific job requirements. The position requires the application of general principles or techniques and training not normally received in a high school. The position requires thorough technical knowledge in a specialized area.
The position requires working knowledge of technical procedures and processes and the ability to teach them to others. In-depth knowledge of library and technology policies and applications is necessary. Job learning time may range from six to twelve months. Job proficiency can be acquired in twelve to twenty-four months.
